Unilever sold Loders Croklaan to Malaysia

Unilever sold its oils & fats business Loders Croklaan to IOI Corp Berhad in December 2002. The sale included more than 20.000 Ha of oil palm estate in East and West Malaysia, as well as Loders Croklaan’s manufacturing facilities in the Netherlands, Egypt, Canada & USA.

This acquisition is a move to expand IOI group’s downstream activities beyond oleochemicals to include palm-based food ingredients. The IOI group has now become a global player in palm oil-based products. IOI is a 61% shareholder in Acidchem, the Malaysian oleochemicals producer, who with 345.000 mt of nameplate splitting capacity are probably the largest single-site producers of fatty acids in the world.

This sale is part of Unilever’s strategy to move away from raw material & intermediate supply in order to focus on Foods, Home & Personal Care activities. In line with this strategy, Unilever old their entire chemical operations, which included Uniqema, to ICI five years ago for £5 billion.
