New association for bioplastics in the UK

British Association of Biobased and Biodegradable Chemicals to put bioplastics on UK's agenda

Great Britain presently is unrepresented when the issues around bioplastics in specific, and biochemistry in general, are discussed in public and political contexts. Currently in the UK, for instance, the debate around the plastic bags tax is heavily conditioned by products claiming biodegradability and compostability, which do not comply with any EN or ASTM Standard, severely damaging our sector there and in Europe.

There is now the opportunity to change this. Thanks to the support given by some industry players, a new trade association in the UK called the British Association of Biobased and Biodegradable Chemicals is being established. Attached is a draft Statute and an outline of the objectives, management and costs of the association.

This message invites you, as a member of European Bioplastics, to adhere to the new association in the UK and to participate in the first meeting.

The kick-off meeting will take place on February 10th in London, at Charles Darwin House in the centre of the city, at 1pm through to 5pm.

The address:
The Society of Biology, Charles Darwin House, 12 Roger Street, WC1N2JU (it is just off Gray’s Inn Road) – some light refreshments will be made available.

Promotor of the initiative is David Newman, who currently runs the Italian Bioplastics Association as well as being President of ISWA.
