GeoDeck Composite Deckings: Rice Hulls for Minimal Water Absorption

Independent testing relveals significant differences

Green Bay Decking, LLC, The Composite Solutions Company, announced that its flagship product, GeoDeck composite decking, has outperformed other leading extruded polyethylene composites in independent water absorption rate testing. The top rating is a direct result of GeoDeck’s industry-leading, patented formula which contains no wood residue or sawdust but instead relies on rice hulls and further distinguishes GeoDeck as the best overall composite decking solution in the industry.

“The science behind our products, which has allowed GeoDeck to achieve best-in-class ratings for mechanical strength, stiffness, joist and stair tread span, density, weight-per-foot, and now water absorption rates, is unmatched anywhere in the composite decking industry,” said Shane O’Neill, director of research and development, Green Bay Decking. “We are, however, never satisfied and will continue to invest in the innovation, quality control, and safety of the GeoDeck product line, as well as our next generation of composite products.”

The presence of water in composite material decreases mechanical properties and durability, including performance during freeze/thaw cycling, dimensional stability, and warping. In addition, the higher the water content the higher the risk of internal decay due to microbiological activity. Sensitivity to water depends on the material formulation. Unlike most other composite products, GeoDeck’s patented formula contains no wood fillers. Instead, GeoDeck includes rapidly-renewable rice hulls, which is naturally more resistant to internal microbial activity and water absorption than wood and wood by-products.

Not all composites are made the same. Contractors, dealers, and homeowners can feel confident and safe with GeoDeck composite decking for many uses in the commercial, marine, and residential industries.

Independent testing was performed in August 2009 by the University of Maine, Advanced Structures & Composites Center (AEWC) in an ISO 17025 accredited testing lab. Testing followed ASTM 1037: Standard Test Methods for Evaluating Properties of Wood-Base Fiber and Particle Panel Material.
