EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System extended with new indicators

The nine new indicators that have been added to the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System dashboards cover four of the five EU Bioeconomy Strategy Objectives

The EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System reports on the sustainability across the environmental, social and economic dimensions of all five of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy objectives*.

The monitoring system is continuously updated and improved, and the most recent additions have enriched the knowledge base with the aim of creating an overview of the sustainability and circularity of the EU Bioeconomy.

The monitoring system allows decision-makers to assess progress towards specific policy targets of the Bioeconomy Strategy. This is particularly important for an umbrella concept such as the bioeconomy, where penetration into daily life and economy may be subtle yet impactful.

Nine new indicators

The nine new indicators that have been added to the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System dashboards cover four of the five EU Bioeconomy Strategy Objectives. These are indicators related to:

  • sustainable management (common farmland bird Index, common forest bird index, grassland butterfly index; forest and other wooded land growing stock; surface of marine and terrestrial sites designated under NATURA 2000),
  • reducing dependence on non-renewable unsustainable resources (share of woody biomass used for energy and material footprint – biomass),
  • mitigating and adapting to climate change (water exploitation index)
  • strengthening European competitiveness and creating jobs (turnover in bioeconomy per sector; value added per sector / bioeconomy value added; gross value added per person employed in bioeconomy).

The indicators, originating from different sources, including Eurostat and the JRC in-house work for the Biomass Mandate, were carefully selected so they could contribute to a balanced and holistic view of the sustainability of the EU Bioeconomy.

EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System

The EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System is a JRC-led action of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy. When it was first released in November 2020, within the European Commission’s Knowledge Centre for Bioeconomy, it contained 19 indicators, as described in the 2020 status report.

The theoretical framework for the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System describes the multi-faceted approach developed by the JRC. It allows for the conceptual disaggregation of various aspects of the bioeconomy which are often interlinked and thus will allow to highlight trade-offs and synergies through the selected indicators.

The nine new indicators added in this latest update bring us one step closer to obtaining an overview of the sustainability and circularity of the EU Bioeconomy.
