Composites Evolution to Showcase Recent Material Developments at JEC Europe 2013

Biotex flax fibre developments at JEC Europe 2013, 12th - 14th March 2013, at Porte de Versailles, Paris, France (stand B13)

Composites Evolution is a supplier of innovative, sustainable materials to the composites industry, including fibre reinforcements, resins and intermediates based on natural, bio-derived, recycled and recyclable feedstocks.

Composites Evolution has now developed a range of lightweight flax fabrics, with areal weights of just 100gsm and 200gsm for use in sports and decorative applications. The 100gsm fabric is particularly targeted towards the production of surfboards and similar products, holding similar characteristics to the typically used 4oz glass cloth. A surfboard, developed by surfboard designer and craftsman Joel Bateman, will be on display at the show.

Developments have been made to the Biotex fabrics to allow for use in decorative applications, e.g. automotive interiors and furniture. This has included introducing different weave patterns and fine weaves, and using these with ultra clear resins and lacquers, creating visually attractive, sustainable finishes. There will be parts demonstrating some of these aesthetics at the show.

Composites Evolution is also currently carrying out in-depth research and development on sizings and treatments to increase the water resistance of flax and improve its compatibility with particular resins. Brendon Weager, Managing Director of Composites Evolution said “Our customers are keen to use Biotex in increasingly more demanding applications, in particular in the marine and construction sectors. The results so far have been very positive and we expect to be able to offer a water resistant flax reinforcement in the near future.”

The Composites Evolution team will be on-hand to answer any questions about their products and these recent developments during show at stand B13.
