Braskem and Toyota Tsusho renew alliance at the K Fair

Braskem announced the renewal of the agreement for the distribution of I'm greenTM Polyethylene in Asia

Braskem and Toyota Tsusho, the trading company of Toyota Motor Group, announced on October 17 at the K Fair being held in Düsseldorf, Germany, the renewal of the agreement for the distribution of I’m greenTM Polyethylene in Asia. The agreement strengthens the alliance between the companies and reaffirms the interest in Asia for the product made from sugarcane ethanol, a renewable source. Toyota Tsusho serves a broad range of clients in Asia, especially in Japan.

The new agreement, in effect until 2018, involves HDPE (high density polyethylene), LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) and LDPE (low density polyethylene), with the latter being the result of investments made this year by Braskem to expand its portfolio and serve a higher number of applications.

The original agreement between the companies was signed in 2010, the same year when Braskem inaugurated its green ethylene unit at the Triunfo Petrochemical Complex, with production capacity of 200 kty, confirming its world leading role in product development. “Toyota Tsusho supported the bio-based PE development project even when it was in the pilot plant phase at around 2007, and has played a significant role in market expansion in Asia for products from renewable sources”, says Luciano Guidolin, vice-president of the Polyolefins, Comperj and Renewables Unit at Braskem. In Japan, where a large part of trash is incinerated to generate energy, the use of products from renewable sources contributes to reduce global warming.

The bio-based plastic from Braskem is a global landmark in innovation and meets the demands of companies committed to sustainable growth. Among its benefits is its significant contribution towards reducing the greenhouse effect since it captures more than 2 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere for each ton of product manufactured. It has properties identical to those of conventional polyethylene and its application has been highly valued in the cosmetics, beverages, retail, packaging for food and hygiene products markets, among others.
