BIO-FED takes stock of the first 12 months as a new player in the global bioplastics sector

European Bioplastics visited the member company at their production facility in Niederzissen, Germany

One year after the foundation of BIO-FED through the acquisition of the bioplastics division of a US-based biotechnology company by AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH, European Bioplastics visited the member company at their production facility in Niederzissen in the southwest of Germany and spoke to Dr Stanislaw Haftka, Sales Director of BIO-FED. He draws the balance of what has been achieved over the past 12 months and takes a look at the company’s prospects for what promises to be a bright future.

“We’ve had a very successful start at BIO-FED. All our expectations have been exceeded and we are confident that this head start will provide for a sustained and strong growth in the coming months and years,” says Haftka. BIO-FED produces and markets biodegradable and/or biobased plastics under the brand name MˑVERA®, including a range for film manufacture and a range for injection moulding applications. As a branch of AKRO-PLASTIC, BIO-FED is part of the international Feddersen Group, a group of companies focusing on worldwide trade, distribution, and marketing of engineering plastics, and machine manufacturing, with production facilities in Europe, China and Brazil.

The BIO-FED team of specialists with many years of experience in developing, compounding, and marketing biodegradable and/or biobased plastics is based at the BioCampus Cologne, Germany. The MˑVERA® products are manufactured at AKRO-PLASTIC in Niederzissen, a location with an annual capacity of about 100,000 tonnes and a quality control as well as a development laboratory certified according to DIN EN ISO 17025.

“BIO-FED benefits from the synergies created by being part of the Feddersen Group. Professional raw material sourcing, product development, additive handling, compounding, quality control, processing and distribution allow BIO-FED to take a unique position in the bioplastics market,” says Haftka. “It is our declared goal to further strengthen our business position and become one of the leading bio-compounders in the world,” Haftka continues, and explains that BIO-FED is aiming to expand into the market of durable bioplastics and to work with other renowned bioplastics companies in the near future.
