BASF presents innovations at interpack 2014

Broad product range for the packaging industry

Düsseldorf, Germany – April 28, 2014 – At the interpack trade fair from May 8 to May 14, BASF is going to present its comprehensive range of packaging raw materials. At stand B43 in hall 10, BASF experts are going to showcase manifold and innovative products that enable customers to develop more sustainable solutions.

New system solutions for compostable packaging

Among other things, BASF is going to demonstrate its expertise in the field of compostable packaging material. To this end, the company is going to present an injection-molded cup prototype made from ecovio® IS. The cup shows which BASF products, from plastic via Masterbatch and pigments to adhesion promoters, are suitable for compostable packaging solutions.

Furthermore, BASF offers its customers pigments for printing on compostable packaging. The pigments are suitable for aqueous, solvent-based and UV-curing printing systems, comply with standards such as EN 13432 in terms of limit values for heavy metals and eco-toxicity and are approved for contact with food (ISEGA certificate).

At the interpack trade fair, BASF will present a folded carton that has been printed by offset with six pigments for compostable packaging, covering a wide spectrum of colors ranging from yellow and magenta to blue.

Safety matters: pigments for sensitive applications

Pigments are also used in sensitive plastic applications such as food packaging or toys. To color such plastic products BASF offers approximately 160 pigments that comply with all legal requirements.

The latest trend: copper shades without copper

Using three effect pigments, BASF is going to present copper shades that are produced without the use of copper. Lumina® Royal Copper is a coated mica that boasts copper effects with high levels of chroma and soft glitter effects. Paliocrom® Brilliant combines the highest levels of chroma and great hiding power with a bright glitter effect. The vaccum-metallized aluminium pigments sold under the Metasheen® brand deliver mirror-like metallic effects.

Water-based products for flexible packaging

Using its Joncryl® FLX and Joncryl® HSL product lines, BASF is going to showcase water-based products that enable the conversion from solvent-based to water-based technologies. These products are used for printing and converting of flexible packaging such as potato chips bags, dairy lids and pharma blister packs. They meet the highest requirements as to printing quality, optimization of substrates and packaging functionality.

Epotal® FLX products are used as lamination adhesives for flexible packaging. They are a water-based and efficient alternative to solvent-based and solvent-free PU adhesives. They do not contain aromatic isocyanates, do not cause any issues with primary aromatic amines (PAAs) and allow an immediate further processing of the laminates.

Innovative solutions for sustainable paper packaging

The search for more sustainable solutions is a growing priority for all companies involved in the paper packaging industry. BASF has reinforced its commitment to address these industry needs by forming the Center for Sustainable Paper Packaging (CSPP), which leverages the entire BASF technology portfolio across the whole value chain. The CSPP focuses on three major areas of contribution:

  • Improved food safety through migration barriers enabling the safe use of recycled fibers;
  • Barrier solutions which contribute towards sustainability trends in packaging;
  • Strengthening solutions to improve the performance of packaging and enable weight reduction.

The CSPP supports customers in developing new products based on innovative solutions. Examples include the recently announced projects with Van Genechten and Sappi:

  • WLC Food Safe, a new type of folding carton developed by Van Genechten with a migration barrier based on BASF’s Ultramid®.
  • With the support of BASF, Sappi has developed two new paper grades coated with a newly developed dispersion to prevent the migration of harmful substances from recycled fibers.

BASF offers an expanding portfolio of barrier solutions. These include ecovio and Ultramid for extrusion-based applications and an emerging range of Epotal dispersions for coating and printing applications.

valureTM : unique surfaces for cars, hand bags and packaging

valureTM from BASF is a system that helps create surfaces with outstanding visual and haptic characteristics. The coating, which is based on a polyurethane dispersion, combines the various features of leather, artificial leather, textile, and soft-touch materials. With the help of valureTM, surfaces can be created and enhanced in all color shades that, in terms of structure and design, cannot be produced in any other way. Meanwhile, BASF has automated the respective technology, cooperates with partners and is starting its first-series production for the automotive, fashion and packaging industry.

The fascinating world of color: Aurora® special effect films

BASF is going to invite the visitors at interpack to take a close look at its Aurora® special effect films. These films open up a variety of optical effects for product designers, packaging and label manufacturers such as high gloss, intriguing reflections and a wide range of colors. Aurora can be used for a variety of applications and in combination with a range of matrix materials such as paper and carton. The effect design options open up a wealth of opportunities for unusual packaging, eye-catching displays, film laminates, sachets and fanciful gift wrap. Aurora special effect film is exclusively distributed by BTC Europe GmbH. BTC is BASF’s European sales organization for specialty chemicals and offers besides Aurora special effect film BASF products to small and mid-sized customers.
