Avantium listed in the 2014 Global Cleantech top 100 & received the European Cleantech Company of the Year Award

Company made enormous progress with development and commercialization of PEF

Amsterdam, October 10th, 2014 – Avantium, a leading technology company specialized in the area of advanced catalytic research and renewable chemistry, today announced it is listed in Global Cleantech top 100 and also received the European Cleantech Company of the Year.

Featuring companies that are best positioned to solve tomorrow’s clean technology challenges, Global Cleantech top 100 represents the private companies with the highest potential to make the most significant market impact.

In May 2014, Avantium was already awarded the European Cleantech Company of the Decade in Stockholm, Sweden.

“To be listed in the global Cleantech top 100 for the fifth consecutive year is a recognition of the continuous progress Avantium has made. Being awarded with the European Cleantech company of the year we believe is due to the tremendous potential of our YXY technology” said Tom van Aken, CEO of Avantium. “We have made enormous progress with the development and commercialization of PEF as the next generation plastic. On top of that we have achieved another important milestone, a $50M investment from Swire Pacific, and our development partners The Coca-Cola Company, Danone and ALPLA as well as our earlier investors. This investment makes it possible to proceed on our path to commercialize PEF, with the engineering and design of our first commercial plant as the next step.”

“The Global Cleantech 100 represents the most inspiring array of entrepreneurs across the cleantech space that are at the forefront of innovation,” said Sheeraz Haji, Cleantech Group’s CEO. “It is a true honour to gather with the global cleantech community every year to recognize and celebrate the achievements of each of the top 100 companies as they continue to solve tomorrow’s energy and resource challenges and redefine sustainable innovation.”

“The Global Cleantech 100 each year provides us with invaluable insight into which companies key market players think are most likely to have a significant impact in the next 5-10 years,” said Richard Youngman, Cleantech Group’s Managing Director, Europe & Asia, and creator of the program. “How the composition of the Global Cleantech 100 list changes over time is revealing of key megatrends and hot sub-sectors – and helps us all get a view on the future.”

About the Global Cleantech 100 list

The Global Cleantech 100 list is collated by combining proprietary Cleantech Group research data, with weighted qualitative judgments of hundreds of nominations, and specific inputs from a global 84-person Expert Panel. To qualify for the list, companies must be independent, for-profit, cleantech companies that are not listed on any major stock exchange.

The 84-member expert panel was drawn equally from leading financial investors and representatives of multi-national corporations and industrials active in technology and innovation scouting across Asia, Europe, and North America. The composition of the expert panel broadly represents the global cleantech community, from pioneers and leaders to veterans and new entrants. The diversity of panelists results in a list of companies that command an expansive base of respect and support from many important players within the global cleantech innovation ecosystem.

This year, a record number of nominations were received: 5,995 distinct companies from 60 countries. These companies were weighted and scored to create a short list of 327 companies. Short-listed nominees were reviewed by Cleantech Group’s Expert Panel, resulting in a finalized list of 100 companies from 17 countries.

About Avantium

Avantium is a leading technology company specialized in the area of advanced catalytic research, with groundbreaking innovations as the primary goal. Avantium has two business units: Catalysis and YXY. At business unit Catalysis, it is the mission to make customers successful by providing smart and fast solutions, based on Avantium’s unique technology, knowledge and expertise. Over the last 15 years Avantium (co)invented multiple new catalysts, new chemical processes and realized significant cost savings allowing our customers to achieve their business objectives much faster than previously possible.

Based on this expertise Avantium developed a novel process for the creation of commercial PEF. YXY is the brand name for this cost competitive technology platform to catalytically convert plant based materials into biobased chemicals and bioplastics like PEF. PEF is a novel 100% biobased polyester with enhanced barrier, thermal and mechanical properties over existing packaging materials. Together with partners The Coca-Cola Company, Danone, ALPLA and Swire Pacific, Avantium aims to make PEF bottles a commercial success. Our proprietary YXY process to make PEF has been proven at pilot plant scale as we are now moving to commercial deployment. Avantium’s headquarters are based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Avantium is running an YXY pilot plant in Geleen, the Netherlands.
