UK: IKEA introduces biodegradable shopping bags

Customers are to be charged for bags in Ikea, the furniture company has announced

Ikea, which has its only Welsh store in Ferry Road, Grangetown, Cardiff, will charge 5 p for each plastic bag as they try to persuade shoppers to use reusable bags. From September, all plastic bags will cost 10p and be biodegradable.

The price of their Big Blue Bag is being cut from 50p to 25p.

Charlie Browne, environment management at Ikea UK, said: “We want to discourage customers from one-off use of carrier bags.”
