Synterra Energy, Inc. announced today the merger of key intellectual property and assets for waste biomass conversion from Pacific Renewable Fuels and Chemicals (Sacramento, California) and Red Lion Bio-Energy (Toledo, Ohio). With the merger, Synterra will launch the commercialization of next generation integrated bio-refineries for the economic production of renewable fuels, chemicals and power from waste biomass in distributed plants.

In 2009, the Synterra team, along with its project partners, was awarded a $25 million Department of Energy grant to demonstrate the commercial readiness of its integrated bio-refinery (IBR) technologies. The 30-barrel per day demonstration project was initiated in 2010 and is the third scale up of the Synterra technologies, following years of R&D and pilot plant operations.
Synterra’s integrated bio-refineries produce renewable fuels, chemicals and/or electricity with less impact on the environment and higher energy efficiency compared to other conversion processes. As an example, Synterra’s synthetic diesel is a high-quality, zero -sulfur renewable fuel that is a direct replacement for conventional petroleum-derived diesel, with 89% lower greenhouse gas emissions than petroleum derived diesel fuel.
