This is particularly true during transportation.When trucks and vans transport plastics between warehouses or to the customers, these materials can sometimes fall off vehicles and be left in the open environment. Therefore, many companies are switching to bioplastics. These materials are made from starch-based compounds and PLA which allows for easy decomposition even if they material is knocked off of vans during transportation. According to studies, we even have the potential to replace 90% of petrol based plastics with bioplastics and further protect the environment during shipping, transportation, and production of goods.
The Different Types of Bioplastics
Bioplastics is a broad category that has different properties based on composition. Three major categories of bioplastics include bio-based, bio-based and biodegradable, and biodegradable. The bio-based plastics such as bio-based polyethylene, are similar to regular plastics but are recyclable and made of materials to help reduce a company’s carbon footprint. The bio-based and biodegradable bioplastics include starch blends and polylactic acid (PLA), which can be broken down and composited. This makes them the eco-friendliest version of the bioplastics. The last category of bioplastics, biodegradable plastics are based on fossil fuels and are not completely eco-friendly. More research needs to be undertaken to make these better for the environment, and therefore, transportation vans should likely avoid these when transporting plastics to warehouses and customers.
Transporting Bioplastics Around the World
Transporting bioplastics rather than plastics can greatly reduce a company’s ecological footprint. If bioplastic material falls off a vehicle during transport, or the tragic event of a crash, these materials will not damage the environment. They can easily decompose where they land and provide a healthy ecosystem for the plants and animals in the area. It would provide great insurance for any company that is attempting to reduce their impact on the environment.
Adopting Bioplastic Transportation Vehicles
While vehicles are needed to transport plastics around the world, they are also made up of plastics. From the interior to the exterior and from design to function, plastic components make up many parts of cars, trucks, and even planes. However, changing out petroplastics to bioplastics from a van is extremely easy and can even save you money. Drivers of eco-friendly vans and trucks are favored by many big name car insurance companies. Therefore, you can save money on insurance while also saving the environment.
Bioplastics can also be used to replace parts of the seats, door panels, and even fuel pipes. This makes cars lighter and therefore, saves you money on gas. The less your car weighs, the less gas it guzzles. This will further cut down on your footprint by eliminating your need for fossil fuels.
Keeping the Earth healthy is easier than it sounds. Simply replace plastics with bioplastics and you can quickly reduce your footprint. Mother Nature will thank you and so will the millions of people that inhabit the Earth long after you.
