Obama’s Bioeconomy:

What's In It For You?

President Obama today unfurled a national initiative that could lead to new opportunities for U.S. companies and scientists, as well as manufacturing jobs for billions and billions of microbes.

Under the National Bioeconomy Blueprint, the White House proposes to increase research, cut regulatory overhead and identify areas where the U.S. will be competitive. The exact terms are some vague—you can see the full report here–but the report states that revenues from genetically modified crops in the U.S. came to $76 billion in 2010 while industrial microbiology, i.e. industrial enzymes and fuels developed with microbes, came to $100 billion.
