Obama biobased procurement directive “sidelines” wood products

According to AWC, wood products are the big losers

The American Wood Council (AWC) has complained that wood products are losing out in a new federal government procurement directive.

AWC’s response follows president Obama’s recent memorandum directing the government to increase procurement of biobased products.

“The unfortunate irony is that USDA’s regulation, referenced in the president’s memo, will exclude most wood products – which are nearly all 100% biobased – from the biobased programmes,” said AWC president Robert Glowinski.

“This exclusion prevents wood products manufacturing facilities around the country from participating in the USDA biobased programmes.

“The wood products industry supports thousands of sustainable jobs in this country, and our products deserve to be recognised within USDA’s biobased programmes.”
