welcome back to business life – well refreshed from your summer vacation, we hope. nova-Institute’s upcoming events at a glance:

  • Only a few spots are left at the nova Session on „Biomass feedstocks today and in the future – going beyond food vs. fuel“, 8 September, Airport Cologne/Bonn. Discuss with experts from Attero, Biobased Delta, Corbion, Covestro, European Bioplastics, MVO and nova-Institute. If interested, please register quickly at www.biobased.eu/nova-sessions/registration
  • nova is part of the exciting new project SuperBIO: SMEs which are part of innovative value chains can receive vouchers for a wide range of services; nova invites you to participate in information events to learn more about the project and your potential participation. The next one will take place on 27 September at nova-Institute (Hürth, Germany). Other workshops will take place in Sevilla, Lodz, Brussels, Düsseldorf and Cologne.   • On 6-7 December nova organises the “5th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers“ (www.co2-chemistry.eu) in Cologne, Germany. The event is the meeting point of the UseCO2 community and offers an exhibition, room for spontaneous meetings, matchmaking tools and online communication during the presentations alongside the conference. The first ten exhibitors can get a booth for free! You’ll find us on twitter with the conference hastag #CCU2016. All details in the newsletter.
  • To give you a taste for the event, the proceedings of last year’s “4th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock, for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers” are now available for only 50 € (http://bio-based.eu/publication-search/?wpv_post_search=4th+Conference+on+Carbon+Dioxide&wpv_filter_submit=)
  • The bio-based economy needs its own trade fairs to showcase its products and to have meeting points for the industry. nova-Institute supports the following three market leaders
    • The bio-based composites pavilion at Composites Europe, 29 November to 1 December 2016 at Messe Düsseldorf (DE). The meeting point for the whole biocomposites industry, WPC and NFC.
    • The BiobasedWorld will premiere on 15 and 16 February 2017 at Cologne trade fair (DE) and will showcase the whole value chain of the bioeconomy, from feedstocks to chemistry to bio-based products.
    • The MAP EXPO in Eindhoven (NL) will open its doors on 29-30 March 2017 as the first global market place for medicinal and spice plants.
  • Last but not least, we would like to introduce Elke Breitmayer who is part of our sustainability department. Her specialties are life cycle assessments and techno-economic analysis. Learn more in the newsletter.

8 September 2016, Conference Center Airport Cologne/Bonn

Following the great success of the first nova Session on biomass feedstocks, we will talk use of sugar and other crops for bio-based industries in Europe – after 2017 and beyond. The interactive workshop will discuss the issue of industrial use of biomass at all levels: political frameworks and the food vs. non-food debate, environmental impacts, public perception and communication and the current and future biomass supply and demand. The number of participants is limited.

27 September 2016, 14:00 – 16:00 h, nova-Institute, Hürth (near Cologne)

SuperBIO is an innovation project supported through the EU Horizon2020 funding programme. The € 3.8 million project supports the development of promising industrial value chains in the bioeconomy. The project provides 10 different types of innovation services to third party SMEs which are funded by the project for 75%. The workshop, organized by nova-Institute, aims to spark new ideas on value chains to be submitted to the SuperBIO project. 6-7 December 2016, Maternus Haus Cologne, Germany

For the fifth time, nova-Institute is organizing one of the leading events on Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) in the world! After four times in Essen, the conference moves to Cologne to have enough space for growth: nova-Institute expects more than 200 participants from 30 countries and 20 exhibitors and offers professional match making tools for efficient networking between the experts from industry, policy and research.

29 November – 1 December 2016, Düsseldorf, Germany

For the third time, exhibitors together with nova-Institute will use the shared stand “bio-based composites” to showcase how great sustainable solutions can be with regard to lightweight construction, materials and modern production and automation solution. Because of the great success of the first two events, the joint stand is now significantly bigger. More than 20 companies will present their bio-based composites on 150 m2.

Within Open-Bio, nova is developing a product database that aims to facilitate the public procurement of bio-based products on a European level. In a common effort with scientific and industry partners, a concept of such a product database has been developed, which needs to be tested and demonstrated now by showcasing exemplary bio-based products that can be relevant for public procurement.

Informative factsheets about the most pressing issues

In an attempt to provide more information about the most relevant issues concerning bio-based products and services, a series of factsheets is being published during the course of the InnProBio project. The first two have been on understanding what exactly bio-based products are, and on sustainability issues related to bio-based products. The latest factsheet covers myths and facts about biodegradability.

kaskadenworkshop-NLWorkshop “Strategien zur Förderung der Kaskadennutzung von Biomasse”

14. September 2016, Tagungswerk Jerusalemkirche, Berlin

Auf der Abschlussveranstaltung des Projektes “Mehr Ressourceneffizienz durch die stoffliche Biomassenutzung in Kaskaden – von der Theorie zur Praxis” werden die Ergebnisse der Arbeiten einem breiten Publikum aus interessierten Kreisen vorgestellt. Insbesondere werden dabei Eckpunkte einer Strategie zur Implementierung der Kaskadennutzung von Biomasse vorgeschlagen und diskutiert. Eine Podiumsdiskussion mit Vertretern von Politik und Wirtschaft rundet die Veranstaltung ab.
