Andreas Scharf, M. Sc., joined the nova-Institute in 2017, working in the sustainability department. With his background in energy process engineering and life cycle assessment, Andreas Scharf supports the nova-Institute in the area of life cycle assessments of bio-based chemicals and materials as well as processes.
Tasks at nova-Institute
Besides supporting various companies with sustainability analysis, Andreas is also involved in several European projects on bio-based economy. For instance, in the AFTERLIFE project (Horizon2020), aiming to recover and convert wastewater into value-added polymers like PHA. Andreas will conduct a life cycle analysis of the AFTERLIFE process to identify environmental hotspots of the pilot scale process.
Andreas is also involved in SuperBio, a Horizon2020 innovation project that aims to develop new, innovative, cross-border and cross-sectorial industrial value chains in the bio-based economy.
Background and expertise
Andreas Scharf studied energy process engineering at the University of Offenburg and completed a master called “Life Cycle and Sustainability at the University of Pforzheim, where he also worked in the Institute of Industrial Ecology. In his bachelor thesis he made a product-LCA for the technology and market leader in the area of mechanized tunnelling systems. The topic of his master thesis was a comparative LCA of two photovoltaic systems which also included experiments of the recycling of plastic components at the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology.
