New project aims to create equal market access for bio-based products

Start of STAR4BBI - STAndards and Regulations FOR the Bio-Based Industry

Project STAR4BBI has been created as a means to develop a practical, effective, sustainable and harmonized regulatory network in order to support Europe’s innovative transition to a bio-based economy by removing legislative barriers to create equal market access for bio-based products. This will be accomplished using both a top-down and a bottom-up analysis to identify any regulatory conflicts which obstruct market uptake of bio-based products. In doing so, a level playing field for environmentally friendly and renewable products will be established. Furthermore, investment in bio-based products and technologies will improve in response to the stable, predictable and business-friendly regulatory system that will be created in partnership with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

STAR4BBI will study 6 real-life examples in order to produce practical, usable and disseminatable data which will be applicable to future efforts to support the evolution towards a bio-economy. The chosen sites of study will be representative of the varying EU regions, areas of regulation, BBI feedstock chain values and BBI product sectors. The tangible outcomes of the project will include 3 specific proposals with recommendations for the modernization of test methodologies, as well as an overview of the obstacles faced by businesses working to transition to bio-based production practices. Moreover, standardized vocabulary across all bio-economy related value chains will be established and cohesion between varying bio-based industrial sectors will be supported via the establishment of new common standards.

Work on Project STAR4BBI will be a collaboration between Stichting Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut, Technische Universität Berlin, Stichting Dienst Landbouwkundig Onderzoek, Wageningen UR and nova-Institut für politische und ökologische Innovation GmbH.
