New biodegradable packaging material claims good barrier properties

FkuR’s Biograde 200C is suitable for injection moulding and extrusion

FkuR is launching a new transparent biodegradable material with good barrier properties at the K2004 show next week.

Developed jointly by the company and the Fraunhofer Institut, the material is suitable for injection moulding and extruding sheet for making thermoformed trays.

Biograde 200C is different from previous biopolymers, the company said, because of its good barrier properties and characteristics similar to polypropylene. Injection moulded products in Biograde 200C behave like those made in standard polystyrene, FkuR claimed.

The new product is made entirely out of naturally occurring biopolymers and biologically decomposable additives. It is offered as a single product alternative to the company’s Bio blend materials, Bio-Flex 219F for thermoforming foil extrusion and Biograde 300A for injection moulding applications.

FkuR said compostability and food contact data is not yet available for Biograde 200C.
