KaiCell Fibers makes the bioeconomy protagonist in the Independence Day of Finland

Today is the Independency Day of Finland. And the bioeconomy is one of the protagonists of the celebration: Marisanna Jarva, member of Finnish parliament is dressing on Arbron™, a highly processed and ecologically produced textile fiber raw material that is designed by Finnish company KaiCell Fibers to fulfil the fiber demand in the growing textile industry.

KaiCell Fibers’ strive is to develop value-added bio-products. The company led by Jukka Kantola has been working for a while with textile materials and now it was a good time to reveal a dress as a part of the Independence day of Finland.

“The textile market is exciting”, says Jukka Kantola, CEO of the company. The textile fiber market in volume is over 100 million tons annually and it is dominated by synthetic, oil-based materials – like polyester. In the beginning of 1990’s, the share of synthetic fibers was only about half of the total volume of textile fibers, but today it is 70%! Synthetic textile fibers are not only non-renewable materials but also are a major source of plastic micro-particles in the oceans”.

Cotton is the second important textile fiber. It is also very troublesome as it drains soils and consumes pesticides. Cotton is the crop in the world that is sprayed with the most chemicals. At these same time cotton fields are always fighting against food production.

Wood is a good alternative as a feedstock for textile materials, butwood-based applications are by far based on hundred years old viscose processes. Viscose process uses very toxic chemicals like carbon disulphide – CS2. This has become a real headache all over the world and there is clear need to get supersede viscose process with safer and more environmentally friendly applications. “Arbron™ is an option”, Kantola claims.

According to Kantola, “Mrs. Marisanna Jarva’s evening dress is a good show case on Arbron™. It is safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly material for textiles. Even better than that, according processors of the fabric and the dress, it performs smoothly and feels really good to wear. Again, very good reasons to carry on.”
