Experts from nova introduced

This month: Achim Raschka, head of department Technology & Markets

Dipl. Biol. Achim Raschka is working at nova-Institute since 2008 as staff scientist, in 2013 he became head of the department of technology and markets. He is involved in different national and international research programs concerning the material use of bio-based products and renewable resources, industrial biotechnology and chemical-technical topics, bio-based monomers and sustainable feedstock for industrial processes as well as the area of CO2 capture and utilization (CCU).

Raschka, Achim_aTogether with Michael Carus he was founder of the conference on “CO2 as feedstock for fuels, chemicals and polymers” that in these days finished it’s 4th edition with a remarkable success. Beside this, Achim Raschka is organizing most of the international coordination for research projects in the Horizon2020 framework and other cooperation – so, for project ideas and offers for cooperation with nova-Institut please contact him.

Background and expertise:

Achim Raschka studied biology at the Free University in Berlin with a focus on ecology before he worked at the public relations office at the German Human Genome Project (DHGP) in Berlin. After some years as a freelancing lecturer and as publisher of digital media he decided to join nova-Institute to work on a dissemination project on renewable resources in Wikipedia and to built up the working group for Industrial Biotechnology that was the base of the later evolved department of technology and markets.

Recent and ongoing projects that Achim Raschka has been or is working on include:

  • BIO-QED – Quod Erat Demonstrandum: Large scale demonstration for the bio-based bulk chemical BDO and IA aiming at cost reduction and improved sustainability. An FP7 project in which nova-Institute is conducting an techno-economic evaluation (TEE) and is responsible for dissemination
  • HEMICELL – a project within the WoodWisdom-Net Research Programm and ERA-NET Bioenergy. nova-Institute is conduction market research and techno-economic evaluation on wood based chemicals, in particular chemical modified hemicellulose, used as functional additives to enhance the material properties of cellulose esters. It is also responsible for dissemination
  • IB2 Market – bringing innovative industrial biotechnology research to the market. In this FP7 project nova-Institute is conduction a life cycle assessment (LCA) and researching relevant markets
  • BIO-TIC – The Industrial Biotech Research and Innovation Platforms Centre, a FP7 project
  • BIOCORE – A biorefinery concept for the transformation of biomass into 2nd-generation fuels and polymers in which nova-Institute took over the task of the techno-economic evaluation of the whole BIOCORE processes as well as the analysis of feedstock availability and supply management, including sustainability aspects, and the market research for the whole range of BIOCORE products
  • Conference on CO2 as feedstock for fuels, chemicals and polymers – responsible for content and programme, 4 editions in the last years.
