European Parliament committees propose biofuels target

The European Parliament’s Industry Committee has recommended that member states prove why they cannot meet the proposed mandatory 2% biofuels target in 2005 and 5.75% in 2010.Member states would have to show “real national potential for biofuel production” and reveal “the amount of national resources allocated to the production of biomass for energy uses other than transport”. The European Parliament’s Energy Committee had already approved an “indicative” biofuels target for the EU described as the Ayuso Gonzalez Biofuels Report. The European Council of Ministers also favors the targets to be “indicative” and non-mandatory. The Ayuso report awaits adoption by a majority in the European Parliament.
