An ethanol refinery under consideration near Clinton would need to be supplied by up to 30,000 acres of crops, including one that’s been studied relatively little.
Wilmington-based Chemtex International is eyeing a site in Sampson County about 70 miles southeast of Raleigh for the refinery. It would make the ethanol from crops including arundo donax, commonly known as “giant reed” or “giant cane,” which won EPA approval last week for use in commercial ethanol production.
