Clearer certification and labelling schemes are needed to ensure the public understand what is meant by biodegradable, compostable or eco-friendly, according to a briefing report published for the European Commission’s Directorate-General Environment.
The “Future Brief” on “Plastic waste – redesign and biodegradability” looks at current research into the redesign of plastics and developments in biodegradable plastics. It assesses the implications of redesign and increased use of biodegradable plastics, as well as policy options to maximise benefits and minimise risks.
