Canada’s Bio-Economy to Develop New National Occupation Standards

New project to improve labour market information available to the industry, enhance skills recognition and improve recruitment

BioTalent Canada announces today the launch of a new project to create new national occupation standards (NOS) for Canada’s bio-economy. This project, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Initiatives Program, will improve labour market information available to the industry, enhance skills recognition and improve recruitment to ensure employers have access to the talent they need.

National Occupational Standards are vital to outline the skills and knowledge bio-economy professionals are expected to possess to achieve business objectives within the sector. NOS support human resource plans on both sides of the labour market and enable employers to recruit and retain skilled workers while allowing job seekers to effectively plan their skills development to attract employers and optimize their performance.

“We are excited to be expanding our labour market research to develop national occupation standards,” says Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. “This project aligns perfectly with the recently announced national labour market census project because we will able to leverage research opportunities, our outreach to industry and perhaps data between the projects to provide more robust results to the industry.”

The new initiative is aligned with the recent recommendations in Canada’s Economic Strategy Tables report: “The Innovation and Competitiveness Imperative” for the Health and Bioscience sector especially for creating a Skills hub to:

  • drive the necessary changes to skills and talent programs;
  • develop a roadmap for the jobs of the future and the skills and competencies they will require; and
  • act as a focal point for gathering and disseminating labour market information.

Over the next three years, working with the industry and its partners, BioTalent Canada will build upon its existing Skills Profiles and other information to create 51 National Occupation Standards (NOS) to:

  • facilitate strategic labour mobility and labour market efficiency
  • enable students, new graduates, and other under-represented groups to make informed employment decisions
  • align post-secondary initiatives to industry needs
  • strengthen employers’ recruitment efforts

The new National Occupation Standards will be available on the BioTalent Canada website, as well as other labour market research, and will be incorporated into the BioSkills Recognition Program as well as several of BioTalent Canada’s products and services. “Through partnerships like this one with BioTalent Canada, we gain insight into the economic and human resource needs of Canadian industries. This knowledge helps governments, post-secondary institutions, employers and unions prepare for the workforce of tomorrow and help Canadians find and keep good middle class jobs.” (– The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour)
