BIORESOURCE HEMP 2000 – The meeting-place of international hemp research and the hemp industry

The 3rd international scientific-technical symposium BIORESOURCE HEMP took place from Sept. 13th till 16th, this time in the Congress Park of Wolfsburg.

More than 300 participants and speakers from 28 countries used the worldwide meeting-place of the hemp industry for intensive exchange of information and for initiating projects, cooperations and business contacts. The four days’ lecture program included 80 international oral presentations, offering anything of interest in terms of hemp (and other fibre crops): Varieties, cultivation & harvest, fibre separation processing & product lines, markets & economy as well as hemp in modern medicine. 12 exhibitiors and 15 poster sessions were present at the concurrent trade show.

The hemp industry still brings forth many innovations: A female Australian scientist introduced the first commercial subtropic (industrial) hemp strain, a new low-cost technique for the production of insulation materials was developed in Denmark, a German automotive company showcased the use of natural fibres in automotive exteriors for the first time, and finally, an ambitious German-Romanian hemp project was presented. During a special event, the fibre and the automotive industry discussed on the new end-of-life vehicle directive, that authoritatively determines which materials will be used in automobiles in the future.

On the whole, the international hemp industry was much more realistic in its assessments than in previous years. However, it became clear that further innovations with regard to techniques and marketing are necessary for a long-term establishment of the hemp industry.

On occasion of the BIORESOURCE HEMP 2000, the “European Industrial Hemp Association” (EIHA) was founded. It brings together almost all European hemp primary processing companies in one association for the first time. The International Association for Cannabis as Medicine (IACM), which was founded in the spring of 2000, held its first international meeting subsequent to the presentations covering the medical use of hemp agents.

In November 2000 a proceedings with approx. 1000 pages will be published in the internet (“Online-Proceedings”), which can be ordered by non-participants, too, at a price of 150,- DM. Those who are interested can register here. The BIORESOURCE HEMP was organized by nova-Institute (Hürth/Germany), working since years in the field of market research, thereby focusing on renewable resources, in collaboration with the event and promotion agency TriTec GmbH (Bochum/Germany).

The BIORESOURCE HEMP 2000 was embedded in the worldwide EXPO 2000 project “Kreislaufwirtschaft” (Closed-Loop Economy) initiated by the city of Wolfsburg. The event gained financial support from the city of Wolfsburg and various companies and inititatives of the hemp industry (HempNut, HempFlax, HempWorld, HanfHaus and the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine).
