Belgium: PolyOne builds on range for biodegradable polymers

PolyOne has recently developed a range of masterbatch products for use with biodegradable resins. Building on their initial product range PolyOne now offers both color and additive masterbatch for use with starch blend biopolymers, PLA, copolyesters and other biodegradable resins.

With the increasing demand for biodegradable products, it is necessary to control each of the components in the end-product to allow appropriate end-of-life disposal. The pigments and additives in these masterbatches have been carefully selected to meet industry requirements and legislation, while offering desirable coloration and properties. PolyOne can also support customers in meeting norms such as EN 13432. Furthermore, several of PolyOne’s grades are homologated to this norm by different European organizations.

The extended masterbatch product range now commercially available includes:

  • OnCap™ Bio additives masterbatches including denesting, antistatic, slip, antiblock, UV barrier, blue tone and antifog.
  • OnColor™ Bio transparent and opaque color masterbatch.

In addition to this standard range, products can be custom-formulated to meet customers’ specific application requirements. For each of the masterbatches a suitable biodegradable carrier is used, for example starch, PLA (Natureworks® LLC), copolyester etc.

These colors find use in film and sheet extrusion processes. PolyOne currently sells color masterbatch for use in making starch based waste bags in the European market. Drawing on its blow molding expertise, PolyOne has also developed transparent colors for biodegradable bottles. These products can be used in a variety of market segments including packaging and agriculture.
