Advanced, renewable chemicals and biobased materials are on the march, say the supporters. Next-generation biofuels are a debacle, according to a chorus of skeptics including the editorial page writers of the Wall Street Journal.

Who’s right? We learned a lot when projects like DSM’s Reverdia biosuccinic project opened, and Solazyme’s demonstration with Roquette in Lestrem, France. We’ll know a lot more in 2013, when six signature projects from some of the hottest companies in the field are expected to come online.
